Report shows New Mexico still struggling with housing, homelessness despite $524M in recent spending
The report says nearly half of New Mexico renters are cost-burdened as state-supported projects lag behind local needs.
- On Tuesday, The Legislative Finance Committee published a report examining more than $524 million in state expenditures, finding that despite the construction of about 62,000 housing units, New Mexico continues to struggle with affordability and homelessness.
- LFC Program Evaluator Josh Chaffin told lawmakers that between 2010 and 2020, New Mexico's housing permit issuance grew 15%, while Arizona and Texas experienced significantly higher increases of 388% and 161%, respectively.
- Nearly half of New Mexico renters are "cost-burdened," meaning they spend more than 30% of their income on housing, Chaffin said, adding, "Our affordability problem in this state is a little different."
- Southern New Mexico officials presented the "Las Cruces model," where city officials purchased property to host five nonprofits, including the Amador Health Center and Mesilla Valley Community of Hope, providing integrated housing and health services.
- Legislators expressed interest in expanding these public-private partnerships statewide. "Good job," Sen. George Muñoz said, encouraging other districts to adopt local solutions to address regional housing needs.
