Report: Illinois commutes rated among America's safest
Illinois had 2.08 rush-hour fatal crashes per 100,000 residents, below the national average of 3.06, the report said.
Illinois ranked 10th safest for commuting in America, according to a report by Beck analyzing Bureau of Labor Statistics data from 2020 to 2024.
The analysis reviewed rush-hour fatal crash data across all 50 states, where Illinois recorded 2.08 fatal crashes per 100,000 residents, below the national average of 3.06.
Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New York claimed the top three spots respectively; larger populations insulate states from poor ratings by reducing per-capita risk, the report notes.
Illinois's rush-hour fatal crash rate is "more than twice as low as South Carolina's and New Mexico's, nearly two and a half times lower than Arkansas's," the report read.
Mississippi ranked 50th in commuter safety with a rate of 6.07 per 100,000; despite recording high absolute crash totals, Illinois's large population substantially reduces per-capita risk, the report concludes.
