Report: Formula 1 returning to Africa in 2030
Rwanda secured approval for a permanent circuit near Kigali as Lewis Hamilton backed the bid, while South Africa’s proposal lost ground, officials said.
Formula One is set to return to Africa with a brand-new Grand Prix in Kigali, Rwanda, around 2030. Rwandan President Paul Kagame secured paddock approval to construct a permanent circuit near Bugesera International Airport, 40km from Kigali.
Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie argued that excluding the continent from motorsport's premier championship is "not acceptable and it is not sustainable," noting the deal delivers a major setback to South Africa's ambitions.
Seven-Time world champion Lewis Hamilton has provided strong backing for the project designed by Alexander Wurz's WurzDesign and Tilke Engineering. The Formula One community was initially skeptical, as Rwanda does not currently have a racing circuit capable of hosting a major event.
Despite Rwanda's breakthrough, two competing local projects in South Africa remain active. Former Sibanye-Stillwater chief executive Neal Froneman is leading a consortium that appointed Rothschild to drive a R2 billion, 125,000-capacity circuit proposal in Swartland, Western Cape.
Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit owner Toby Venter achieved FIA Grade status, declaring, "We are ready for the return of Formula One to African soil." President Cyril Ramaphosa is scheduled to attend a Grand Prix later this year alongside McKenzie to bolster South Africa's case.
