Report: Federal spending fails to make California affordable
Billions of dollars in federal spending over a decade have failed to keep homeownership affordable for millions across the U.S. including California.
California received $81.4 billion from the Department of Housing and Urban Development between 2015 and 2024 but remains one of the least affordable states to live in, according to Open the Books.
Home prices in California increased by more than 82% from 2015 to 2024, as reported by Neefus.
Improving affordability may require addressing local zoning restrictions, permit regulations, and federal spending, as recommended by Open the Books.
