Government rejects call to measure productivity across public service
The federal government rejects implementing 19 productivity measurement recommendations that aim to improve data collection and service efficiency across the public sector.
- On Dec. 12, a working group on public service productivity urged the federal government to measure public-service productivity, but Ottawa is not considering this at this time.
- Because current data are limited, the working group on public service productivity said without reliable data, it is difficult to assess effectiveness and efficiency and recommended Statistics Canada explore a measurement program for the public service .
- The working group recommended 19 changes, including probation-end reviews, public reporting of dismissed or underperforming public servants, and managers' performance training.
- The Treasury Board Secretariat responded that several recommendations align with current actions, such as deploying artificial intelligence, reviewing programs, and highlighted the Build Canada exchange program.
- If adopted, the proposals would enable benchmarking of government performance and encourage hiring from private, academic and non-profit sectors, the working group recommended.
