Repeat offenders drive rise in property crime as Duncan sees spike in violence and fraud
Fraud files rose to 17 and calls for service increased by about 1,000 as police linked many cases to scams and disorder, Beard said.
On June 8, Ken Beard, officer in charge of the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP, presented a quarterly report to Duncan city council showing a 58 per cent rise in violent crime and a 325 per cent increase in fraud cases.
Calls for service increased 20 per cent during the first three months of 2026, representing roughly 1,000 additional incidents, as Beard said Mounties were involved in "quite a cross-section of events" over the span.
Mischief calls rose 122 per cent, increasing by 62 files, with many incidents concentrated near the Silver Bridge and Trunk Road; of the detachment's 5,740 files, 1,229 originated within Duncan city limits.
Most fraud reports involved online scams mimicking legitimate bank or Canada Revenue Agency websites, while police noted two traffic stops in February and March resulted in the seizure of drugs, weapons, and stolen property.
Beard referenced a January meeting of community leadership groups focused on addressing racism in the region, emphasizing that leaders must confront discrimination and model actions reflecting an unwillingness to accept that behavior.
