Repairs can be expensive and cumbersome. Throwing away often appears as the better option. A new law should change that.
New smartphone or repair? Repairing is often expensive or not possible – for example because spare parts are not available. This is changing now.
New rules impose more on manufacturers of electrical appliances. This does not mean whether repairs are expected to be better than new purchases in the future.
A directive that makes it easier to repair products instead of replacing them has come into effect in European Union countries since August 1, the European Commission announced. Consumers can request repairs for broken products such as smartphones, washing machines or refrigerators, even if the statutory warranty period has expired. Manufacturers will have to offer these repairs at a reasonable price and within a reasonable time.

European consumers will be granted the right to repair of white goods and consumer electronics. That sounds good, but the new rules will only be a success if vouchers are introduced to keep repairs affordable.
