Brookfield Bets on Grid-Ready Indian States for Green Investment

The ministry said the load will be met mainly with renewable power as officials weigh transmission and grid balancing for spiky demand.

  • On Monday, the Ministry of Power informed parliament that AI data centers will require an additional 26.3 GW of electricity load by 2031-32, nearly double the government's previous estimate from March.
  • Sharp variability in data center electricity demand poses grid stability risks, Samir Chandra Saxena, Chairman and Managing Director of Grid India, warned that sudden withdrawals could "create a disturbance kind of situation for the grid."
  • Nawal Saini, head of India energy at Brookfield, told reporters on Tuesday that the firm is scaling up renewable energy investments in southern India where transmission capacities are better aligned with generation.
  • Policy-Level discussions are underway regarding locating new data centers away from urban IT hubs to avoid transmission congestion and stabilize the grid. Placing facilities near green energy sources is also being considered.
  • India's domestic AI market is projected to reach INR 11.7 trillion by 2032, driving a 24-fold expansion in AI-dedicated infrastructure from 275 MW to 6,546 MW. This follows capacity growth from 375 MW in 2020 to around 1.5 GW by 2025.
