From 2029, large water abstractions will be systematically recorded for the first time – environmental organisations criticise the late start and high thresholds.
The dry summer has put Austria's water reserves under proper pressure. Low groundwater levels, fewer water in numerous rivers and enormous damage caused by the drought have once again shown how valuable the "blue gold" is. Now the Federal Government is drawing consequences: Large water abstractions are to be measured in the future and recorded in a central digital register.
A centralized collection of data should make water consumption easier to analyse. The introduction takes place gradually and not immediately. NGOs, however, do not go far enough with the government's new plans.
As of 2029, establishments in need of large amounts of water should register their consumption in a register, which should facilitate planning, for example, for drought periods.
In the future, a database will document water consumption – with the exception of small quantities. Agriculture Minister Norbert Totschnig (ÖVP) presented the draft for the central water collection register at a press conference on Friday. The aim was to improve water planning in times of climate change. Finally, the debate was also about large consumers who "swallow" too much water.
The Federal Government is presenting the draft for a new water collection register. It is intended to provide better data and strengthen the long-term water supply.
