To date in Italy there are 1978 prisoners (of which 104 women) enrolled in 55 universities: since 2018 the number of university students in prison has almost tripled. In 2025 50 three-year degrees and seven magistrali were celebrated. The 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence is behind us. It’s a good time to acknowledge that the ideals of freedom our country claims to cherish are being eroded by our own government. Freedom of speech and assembly appear at the top of our constitutional tradition for a reason. Political beliefs should never be treated as crimes. That remains true even when those beliefs challenge the government or the views of people in power. …
