'Nation Where Bin Laden Hid Out': US Senator Attacks Pakistan over Iran Mediation
Scott said Pakistan is no better qualified to mediate than Qatar, citing its record on terrorism and religious persecution.
On Monday, US Senator Rick Scott criticized Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for paying tribute to the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, questioning Pakistan's suitability as a mediator in US-Iran ceasefire discussions.
Funeral ceremonies for Khamenei and four family members, including a 14-month-old granddaughter, continued in Qom on Tuesday at the Jamkaran Mosque, following Sharif's tribute calling the leader "a great scholar and leader whom millions of Muslims will remember."
Scott alleged Pakistan is "a country where bin Laden hid out for a decade" with selective blasphemy law enforcement, claiming the Prime Minister praised a "genocidal mass-murdering tyrant" and asserting Islamabad is "no better qualified to 'mediate' this than the Hamas-harbouring Qataris."
Following a Tehran procession on Monday, another procession is scheduled in Iraq on Wednesday before Khamenei's final burial Thursday in Mashhad, while Scott warned Islamabad: "Islamabad should take note; we're watching closely."
Iranian state television showed large crowds attending prayers led by senior cleric Abdollah Javadi-Amoli, during which mourners chanted "death to America," underscoring tensions amid the funeral ceremonies.
