Registering noncitizens to vote in NJ not our error, contractor says
An independent review is underway after officials said a Motor Vehicle Commission software error registered about 6,600 noncitizens to vote.
- On Tuesday, Governor Mikie Sherrill revealed that a software error at the Motor Vehicle Commission registered roughly 6,600 noncitizens to vote over one year, with about 400 casting ballots.
- The registrations stemmed from an automatic voter registration system established by former New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy in 2018, where applicants selecting 'no' on keypads were erroneously registered anyway.
- Sherrill launched an independent investigation after learning of the problem on July 15, though State Sen. Kristin Corrado and other Republicans demanded the Legislature form a committee with subpoena powers.
- State Sen. Declan O'Scanlon argued the system was 'deeply flawed,' while a spokesperson for Phil Murphy stated he was unaware of the error during his tenure.
