Energy Prices Poised to Reach Record High in 2026

PJM INTERCONNECTION REGION, JUL 23 – The new capacity price cap is nearly 22% higher than last year and may cause electricity bills to rise 1.5% to 5% across the PJM region, officials said.

  • This past week, PJM Interconnection announced auction results, setting a record-high capacity price of $329.17 per megawatt-day for June 2026–May 2027.
  • Amid climbing energy needs, Will Sauer, Exelon vice president of federal regulatory affairs, warned that resource additions aren’t keeping pace.
  • With 135,192 MW on offer, PJM recorded about 45% gas, 21% nuclear, 22% coal, 4% hydro, 3% wind and 1% solar, during the July 9–15, 2025 auction.
  • PJM said bills would rise 1.5% to 5%, with Philadelphia-area customers facing a 10% increase starting June 1.
  • Looking ahead, PJM expects record-high prices to translate into 1.5%–5% bill increases starting summer 2026, and PJM plans a December auction for the 2027-28 delivery year.
