Reform MP calls on England team to 'keep winning for sake of women's safety'
Charities and MPs said abuse is caused by perpetrators, not football results, after a Lancaster University study found rises of 26% to 38% around matches.
Sarah Pochin, Reform MP for Runcorn and Helsby, faced backlash yesterday for a social media video suggesting England must "keep winning" World Cup matches to prevent domestic abuse, claiming violence "go through the roof" when the team loses.
Experts and charities maintain that abuse is a choice made by perpetrators; research shows incidents rise by 38% after losses and 26% after wins, indicating abuse occurs regardless of game outcomes.
Refuge and multiple MPs labeled the comments "irresponsible" and "disgraceful," with Barking MP Nesil Caliskan claiming the video set the campaign against domestic violence back "about 40 years."
At the Makerfield by-election count, Pochin defended her comments to ITV News, insisting, "My point of raising it today is of course not to put any responsibility on England."
Charities continue promoting the National Domestic Abuse Helpline , urging the public to recognize that abuse is a pattern of behavior, not a result of external events.
