Reform announces Robert Kenyon as Makerfield by-election candidate
Reform UK named self-employed plumber and councillor Robert Kenyon as its candidate for the Makerfield by-election on Tuesday. Kenyon previously contested the seat in the 2024 General Election, finishing second with 31.8 per cent of the vote.
Labour MP Josh Simons stepped down to allow Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham a path back into the House of Commons. The resignation triggered the by-election in the constituency.
Reform leader Nigel Farage described the contest as a "David versus Goliath battle" between Kenyon and "open borders Burnham." The Monster Raving Looney Party and Restore Britain have also confirmed candidates.
Labour confirmed Burnham as its candidate earlier today, with analysts suggesting a victory could position the former minister to challenge Sir Keir Starmer for party leadership.
Constituents recently elected Reform councillors in local elections, creating uncertainty in what was traditionally a safe Labour seat. The voting dynamics complicate Burnham's path to victory.
