Reds Pitching Coach Derek Johnson Takes Leave of Absence
Assistant coaches Matt Tracy and Oscar Marin will handle game-day pitching duties while the Reds give Derek Johnson a personal leave.
On Friday, Cincinnati Reds pitching coach Derek Johnson began a "personal leave of absence," skipping the team's road trip to face the St. Louis Cardinals.
Johnson, 54, is in his eighth season as Reds pitching coach after spending three seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers and earning Baseball America's 2019 MLB coach of the year honors.
Assistant pitching coach Matt Tracy and bullpen coach Oscar Marin assumed Johnson's game day duties, manager Terry Francona said, with Tracy handling mound visits going forward.
Respecting Johnson's privacy, the team offered no timeline for his return or specific details regarding the absence, as Francona emphasized keeping routines consistent to minimize disruptions.
No immediate plans exist to hire a temporary replacement, as players hope to perform well for Johnson during the pivotal weekend series against the Cardinals.
