Reddit starts verifying ages of users in the UK
UNITED KINGDOM, JUL 14 – Reddit partners with Persona to verify ages and prevent under-18 access to adult content, aligning with UK Online Safety Act measures backed by Ofcom enforcement and fines.
- On July 15, 2025, Reddit began verifying UK users' ages before they can view certain mature content.
- The UK’s Online Safety Act mandates robust age checks, with compliance due by July 25, 2025, and potential fines of up to £18 million or 10% of global revenue, Ars Technica reported.
- Age verification by Persona uses selfies or ID uploads, Reddit said, and Persona promises not to retain photos for more than seven days.
- We expect other companies to follow suit, or face enforcement if they fail to act, Ofcom said, noting it can seek court orders to block services or ads.
- As laws change, Reddit said, age verification may expand beyond the UK while platforms like TikTok, Instagram and Facebook prepare similar measures.
