Red Sox 1B Willson Contreras (Hand) Exits After Being Hit by Pitch
Contreras was hit by a 94.2 mph sinker and left after eight hit-by-pitches this season, the most among major league first basemen.
On Sunday, Boston Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras exited the game against the Tampa Bay Rays after absorbing a 94.2 mph sinker directly off his right hand in the first inning.
Contreras has been the offensive pillar for a struggling Red Sox lineup, leading the roster in home runs , RBI , and walks through the season's first six weeks.
Facing Rays righthander Nick Martinez, Contreras was hit by the pitch and remained to run the bases but did not advance; Andruw Monasterio replaced him on defense for the second inning.
The Red Sox announced the injury as a "right hand contusion," per Chris Cotillo of MassLive, though the team expects further X-ray testing to determine if structural damage occurred.
With outfielder Roman Anthony already on the 10-day injured list, missing Contreras for more than 10 days would be a virtual certainty if X-rays reveal damage beyond a bruise.
