Red Sox place Rafaela on 10-day IL with right quadriceps strain
Rafaela is sidelined with a right quadriceps strain after missing three games, while Eaton returns from Worcester as Boston seeks to keep its outfield intact.
- On Sunday, the Boston Red Sox placed All-Star center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Thursday, due to a right quadriceps strain. The club recalled infielder/outfielder Nate Eaton from Triple-A Worcester to fill the roster spot.
- Persistent quad soreness forced Rafaela to miss three consecutive games against the Baltimore Orioles and two against the Seattle Mariners. The 25-year-old attempted to play through the discomfort before management opted for extended rest.
- Ranking second on the team with 5.4 Wins Above Replacement, Rafaela batted.282 with 16 home runs and 70 RBIs this season. He is also considered a favorite to win his second consecutive Gold Glove award.
- To avoid disrupting prospect Kristian Campbell's rhythm at Triple-A Worcester, manager Chad Tracy recalled Nate Eaton. Tracy said they called Eaton because "he's the best defensive outfield option."
- For Sunday's series finale against the Orioles, catcher Adley Rutschman returns to the lineup batting third as Boston seeks a four-game sweep. Rutschman hit two home runs during the September 3 matchup against Baltimore.
