Sailing-Italy Dominate to Win America’s Cup Run-up Regatta in Naples
The Italian challenger beat Emirates Team New Zealand in the final and showed early form ahead of next year’s America’s Cup.
- On Sunday, Italy's Luna Rossa team won the Louis Vuitton 38th America's Cup Preliminary Regatta in Naples, securing a decisive head-to-head match-race victory against Emirates Team New Zealand.
- The final featured the top two crews from eight fleet races that included teams from Britain, France, Switzerland, and the United States competing on the Bay of Naples.
- Led by co-helm Marco Gradoni and skipper Peter Burling, the four-member crew never trailed at any marker and maintained a lead of over 200 metres during the final upwind leg.
- Gradoni said, "Today was a big day for our team," as supporters cheered in the Race Village, celebrating alongside teammates Maria Giubilei and Gianluigi Ugolini.
- Next year's competition for the Auld Mug will feature bigger AC75 yachts, though the one-design AC40s used in Naples will remain central to women's and youth events.
