Feds: Authorities Seize 150+ Pounds of Fentanyl in SC, Largest Bust in State History
SOUTH CAROLINA, JUL 23 – Authorities seized 156 pounds of fentanyl worth $1.7 million in coordinated stops, indicting two California brothers on conspiracy and drug trafficking charges.
- On July 1, law enforcement agencies in Lexington and Richland counties intercepted a tractor trailer and confiscated 71 kilograms of fentanyl along with 20 kilograms of methamphetamine during jointly conducted traffic stops in South Carolina's Midlands region.
- Following a tip last month about a significant fentanyl shipment heading to the Midlands, multiple agencies conducted stakeouts and intercepted vehicles involved in moving narcotics between a tractor-trailer and a passenger car.
- The fentanyl confiscated in this operation, believed to have originated from Mexico, is valued on the street at approximately $1.7 million and contains enough lethal doses to potentially kill around 36 million individuals, making it the largest fentanyl bust ever recorded in South Carolina.
- Alberto Rios-Landeros, 26, and his brother Chris Guadalupe Rios-Landeros, 23, both legally residing in the United States, were federally charged with plotting to distribute and possessing fentanyl and methamphetamine with the intent to sell, facing potential life sentences.
- Authorities emphasized strong collaboration among agencies, stating this bust sends a clear message to traffickers, and dedicated ongoing efforts aim to dismantle networks supplying fentanyl to protect communities across the state.
