In 2025, the Federal Government took the record amount of 21.4 billion euros with CO2 certificates. Consumers paid most of the climate dues when buying gasoline, fuel oil and gas. The money flowed mainly to real estate owners, e-car drivers and industrial companies.
Since 2008, CO2 emission rights have been sold for a total of just over 100 billion euros. More than one-fifth of them changed hands last year alone. The record amount goes into climate protection. Experts praise the progress made. But one sector lags behind.
