Anchorage breaks January snowfall record

Anchorage received nearly 40 inches of snow in January, exceeding forecasts and causing over 100 crashes with many vehicles stranded, officials said.

  • On Tuesday, Anchorage, Alaska, hit a new snowiest January record with 39.7 inches, after a winter storm dumped more than 10 inches, the National Weather Service office in West Anchorage said.
  • National Weather Service forecasters said heavy snow fell atop roads glazed by rain early Tuesday, prompting an advisory upgrade to a winter storm warning after totals likely exceeded 8 inches.
  • Anchorage police reported 48 crashes, 99 vehicles in distress and 36 collisions, including 12 injuries, as of 4 p.m. Tuesday, while two Anchorage Fire Department ambulances were struck with no injuries.
  • Anchorage School District dismissed students early, canceled after-school activities, and announced the early closure around 11:30 a.m., while city plow crews worked around-the-clock to clear roads, warning it could take up to 12 hours.
  • With four days left in January, forecasters said the monthly total could still climb though the storm was expected to peter out, and Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport recorded 0.55 inches of rain, more than doubling its previous daily record set in 1976.
