The museum's display features YouTube's first video, viewed nearly 380 million times, highlighting early digital design and the evolution of online video sharing.
- The V&A has acquired a reconstructed 2005 YouTube watchpage and the first upload, Me at the zoo, now on display in the Design 1900-Now gallery at V&A South Kensington.
- Using archived timestamps, the V&A digital conservation team spent 18 months reconstructing the platform's design from 8 December 2006 with YouTube's UX team and oio, London studio.
- The 19-second clip Me at the zoo was uploaded on April 23, 2005 and has been viewed 382 million times with more than 18 million likes.
- The V&A says the acquisition opens new storytelling opportunities, with Neal Mohan stating `By reconstructing an early watchpage, we aren’t just showing a video; we are inviting the public to step back in time to the beginning of a global, cultural phenomenon.`
- The acquisition builds on earlier digital picks including WeChat, Flappy Bird, EUKI and the mosquito emoji, highlighting early user-interface conventions that became standard across platforms.
