Reach to close GalwayBeo website as part of broader cuts
- On Wednesday, Reach announced the closure of three news titles—AberdeenLive, KentLive, and GalwayBeo—cutting 220 editorial roles while creating around 60 new positions, resulting in a net loss of 160 jobs.
- Chief content officer David Higgerson cited weak 'market position' in those areas, noting Reach faces declining Google search referral traffic and BBC competition that mirrors its output up to 70% of the time.
- Higgerson described the firm as being in "the middle of a mammoth shift in how audiences want content and journalism," with "active engaged time" becoming the company's north star metric by year-end.
- The firm will "look for opportunities to redeploy colleagues, reducing the need for compulsory redundancies," while Higgerson noted leadership cut non-people budgets to "protect as many jobs as possible."
- This move follows a major restructure last September when Reach cut more than 320 jobs, as half-yearly results show overall revenues down 9% and digital revenues down 11.4%.
