RBI Asks Banks to Clear Cheques Within Hours Starting October 4
The Reserve Bank of India will cut cheque clearance from two days to hours starting October 4, improving efficiency and reducing settlement risk for banks and customers.
- On August 14, 2025, the Reserve Bank of India announced that phase 1 of continuous cheque clearing will start on October 4, 2025, replacing batch processing in CTS.
- To improve efficiency, the RBI decided to transition CTS from batch processing to continuous clearing, reducing the T+1 clearing cycle to a few hours.
- To ensure continuous clearance, drawee banks must confirm cheques within three hours or they will be deemed approved at 2:00 PM, with the process running between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
- Presenting banks must release payments to customers no later than one hour after settlement, as the RBI states from October 4, 2025.
- In the next stage, Phase 2 will commence on October 4, 2025, expanding continuous clearing and changing item expiry time to T+3 clear hours, RBI announced.
