Ravinia Festival's Hunter Pavilion Near Chicago Reopens After $70 Million Gut Renovation
The overhaul reduced capacity to 2,840 seats and added new backstage space, as Ravinia seeks better sound and accessibility for audiences and musicians.
Following a $70 million gut renovation, Ravinia Festival's Hunter Pavilion in Highland Park, Illinois, officially reopened this week with improved acoustics and wider seating.
Planners lowered the pavilion's capacity from 3,350 to 2,840 seats to accommodate wider seating while ensuring full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Crews expanded the facility underground to include a new music library, practice rooms, and locker rooms, while installing LED lights and nine ventilation fans to manage stage temperatures.
The Chicago Symphony Orchestra begins its summer season Saturday night, with chief conductor Marin Alsop leading pianist Yunchan Lim and Lizzo in the inaugural performance.
Ravinia president Jeffrey Haydon drew design inspiration from the Aspen Music Festival and Ojai Music Festival to foster a relaxed, family-oriented atmosphere at the renovated venue.
