Raven's Calais Campbell says football 'brings me joy' amid family tragedy
Calais Campbell returned to the Ravens after missing early camp, saying the game helps him through a summer family tragedy.
Following his mother's death, Calais Campbell, Baltimore Ravens defensive lineman, spoke publicly for the first time on Tuesday, saying "I love the game of football a lot & it brings me joy."
In late June, police found Campbell's 71-year-old mother dead at her Atlanta home during a welfare check; her 41-year-old son Ciarre Campbell was charged with murder after being found with a knife.
Boasting 117 career sacks in 278 NFL games with 259 starts, the six-time Pro Bowler signed a one-year deal in April for his 19th NFL season with Baltimore.
First-Year head coach Jesse Minter allowed Campbell to miss early training camp sessions and praised him as an "unbelievable leader and mentor" on the D-line despite the timing's difficulty for his family.
Campbell remains focused on his return to the field, noting "playing football has been great for me" and expressing gratitude for the NFL community's prayers during these difficult months.
