Rare Royal Mint 50p coin selling for more than £200 - how to spot
Coin experts say rare 50p pieces can fetch hundreds of pounds, with one Blue Peter design selling for £200 after 21 bids on eBay.
A rare Blue Peter 50p coin designed by competition winner Florence Jackson to celebrate the London 2012 Olympics fetched £200 on eBay after 21 bids.
Originally sold for £1.09, the coin's value has soared due to its rarity and Olympic connection, while its 27.5mm diameter provides ample space for decorative pictures.
Other examples have previously sold for as much as £286, with Royal Mint data showing the Olympic Goalball 50p among the top 10 most valuable coins with 1,615,500 minted.
Coin experts advise the public to check old 50p pieces carefully, as rare editions may be worth far more than face value when condition and design errors are considered.
The 50p piece has become the most collected coin in the UK, celebrating major events over the past 50 years of British history through its unique heptagonal design.
