Rare orphaned skunks return to the wild
Four rare western spotted skunks were rehabilitated until they met weight and development goals, including an orphan flown more than 400 miles for care.
After weeks of rehabilitation, the San Diego Humane Society's Ramona Wildlife Center released four western spotted skunks back into the wild.
Autumn Welch, wildlife operations manager at Ramona Wildlife Center, said, "We have never seen this many western spotted skunks in a single season before."
Flying Tails Animal Rescue transported an orphaned skunk more than 400 miles from Sierra Wildlife Rescue in Northern California to join the group in Ramona.
The skunks were returned to a remote habitat in Valley Center, California, after reaching the necessary weight and developmental milestones to thrive independently.
Two remaining spotted skunks continue receiving care at the facility and are expected to be released within the next month or two.
