Rare endangered red panda twins born at zoo
The endangered cubs are the first red panda twins at the zoo in 12 years and a genetic boost for a managed breeding program.
On Wednesday, July 8, Hertfordshire Zoo announced the birth of twin endangered red pandas born June 3, marking the first twins welcomed at the facility in 12 years.
Parents Nila and Ash were paired late last year through the EAZA Ex-situ programme; Nila arrived at Hertfordshire Zoo in November 2025 from Bojnice, Slovakia under the international breeding initiative.
Keepers ensure the habitat remains cool for the cubs, who are native to the Eastern Himalayas, after the birth occurred just weeks before record-breaking temperatures hit Britain.
Managing Director Tyler Whitnall said the team is "absolutely over the moon" to welcome the cubs, noting the pair breeding successfully in their first season together is an incredible achievement.
These cubs provide crucial genetic support to European populations while fewer than 10,000 mature red pandas remain in the wild due to habitat loss and poaching, underscoring conservation urgency.
