Rare bottle of Arctic beer to be opened after 150 years to revive brew
Innis & Gunn will release a limited-edition beer brewed using a rare 150-year-old Arctic Ale bottle, known for its high calorie content and original 1875 recipe.
- On Monday November 3, 2025, Dougal Gunn Sharp will pour a 1875 Allsopp’s Arctic Ale bottle to seed Innis & Gunn 1875 Arctic Ale, following the original recipe.
- Brewed in Burton-upon-Trent for Arctic voyages, the ale was designed to resist freezing at minus 40C and nourish British explorers during the Arctic expeditions of 1875.
- The bottle is extremely rare; Victorian records describe it as dark brown and so thick it was lifted in buckets, with only two seen for sale in recent memory, and Mr Sharp bought it over a decade ago from a Shropshire garage.
- Later this year, the beer will appear in limited quantities at Innis & Gunn’s Taprooms in Edinburgh and Glasgow and at Allsopp’s venues in London, with hand-bottled editions offered by ballot.
- The collaboration with Allsopp’s Brewery positions the release as a physical bridge to the past, reconnecting modern drinkers with a brewing moment from nearly 170 years ago and it's never been done before.
