How Much Are Beatrix Potter 50p Coins Worth? The Rarest Ones to Look Out For
The circulated coin is listed as a collectible, while The Royal Mint says value depends on condition, design and mintage.
A 2017 Peter Rabbit 50p coin is listed on eBay for £32,175.70, over 60,000 times its face value, from a seller in Hounslow, London. The Beatrix Potter character coin also includes £9.95 delivery.
To mark the 150th anniversary of Beatrix Potter's birth, The Royal Mint launched a commemorative collection in 2016. The series features 15 coins with Peter Rabbit designs released annually from 2016 through 2020.
Mintage figures vary across the collection, with the 2018 Flopsy Bunny and Peter Rabbit coins each minted at just 1.4 million. The 2016 Jemima Puddle-Duck 50p has a higher mintage of 2.1 million.
Rebecca Morgan, Director at The Royal Mint, warned collectors about secondary market pricing, saying "some of which seem a bit far-fetched." She urged buyers to verify condition, design, mintage, and authenticity before committing to prices.
Coins released in 2019 and 2020 were not placed in general circulation; they were only available through special collector's sets. This restricted distribution significantly affects their rarity and secondary market value.
