Rangers say second baseman Josh Smith will be hospitalized at least a week with viral meningitis
The Rangers said Smith will stay in a Dallas-area hospital for 7-10 days before doctors set a return-to-play plan.
On Friday, May 15, 2026, Texas Rangers second baseman Josh Smith was hospitalized for viral meningitis and is expected to remain in a Dallas-area hospital for 7-10 days.
Smith, 28, had been on the 10-day injured list since May 4 with a right glute strain and was batting.217 with six RBIs in 31 games.
The Rangers said Smith visited a doctor Wednesday after feeling ill; Chris Young, president of baseball operations, stated the team's "only concern right now is Josh's health."
A specific plan for Smith to return to play will be determined once he resumes physical activity, as the Rangers were set to open a three-game series at the Houston Astros.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, meningitis is a swelling of the protective lining of the brain and spinal cord caused by a viral infection.
