- On January 14, 2026, Indian wildlife officers are hunting a lone single-tusked male elephant blamed for killing at least 20 people and injuring 15 in West Singhbhum district across Chaibasa and Kolhan forest areas.
- Divisional Forest Officer Aditya Narayan said the bull was likely separated from its herd and is believed to be in musth, while Wildlife Institute of India researchers link rising conflicts to mining and deforestation in Jharkhand.
- On January 6, the elephant struck at Babaria village, killing four family members sleeping on a gunyu, and relatives say Prakash Das was found decapitated on January 9 while Damodar Kuldi was also killed.
- More than 100 personnel, including mahouts and specialist teams from Odisha and West Bengal, have been mobilised by the Jharkhand Forest Department, but three tranquillising attempts failed and a mahout died.
- The Wildlife Institute of India estimates 22,446 wild elephants in India and reports at least 1,270 deaths from elephant attacks in Jharkhand over 18 years, noting mining and habitat loss pressures.
