Rallying-Solberg wins Monte Carlo opener in Toyota podium sweep
Oliver Solberg became the youngest Monte Carlo Rally winner in the championship era as Toyota secured the top three positions, starting the season with a full podium sweep.
- On Jan 25, Oliver Solberg won the Monte Carlo Rally as champions Toyota recorded a one-two-three finish in the principality, with Elfyn Evans second and Sebastien Ogier third.
- After joining Toyota this season as a replacement for departed double champion Kalle Rovanpera, Solberg led by 59.3 seconds after Saturday on treacherously slushy, icy mountain roads north-east of the principality.
- Margins showed Evans and Ogier trailing Solberg as Evans finished 51.8 seconds behind and Ogier a minute and 10 seconds further back, while Solberg spun on an icy hairpin in the second of the final day's four stages without consequences.
- Evans meanwhile had a clear day and took more Sunday points than anyone, with Hyundai's Adrien Fourmaux fourth and Belgian teammate Thierry Neuville fifth after a puncture.
- Looking ahead, the next round is Solberg's home rally in Sweden, with Oliver Solberg, 24, saying, `This was the most difficult rally I've done in my life. It's my first rally on Tarmac in the car and here we are, winning the thing,` said Solberg.
