Indian Navy Launches First Indigenous Fleet Support Ship For Extended Deployments

The 43,500-tonne vessel will refuel and resupply warships at sea, and the five-ship programme has 82% indigenous content, officials said.

  • On Tuesday, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched the Indian Navy's first indigenous Fleet Support Ship, Surya, and laid the keel for FSS-5 at Hindustan Shipyard Limited in Visakhapatnam.
  • Designed for 60-day missions, the 43,500-tonne Surya will refuel and resupply warships at sea during "out of area" operations across the Indian Ocean Region without requiring port returns.
  • Built with 82% indigenous content, the five Fleet Support Ships use integrated modular construction at HSL, where upgrades expanded covered building dock capacity to 80,000 DWT.
  • The Indian Navy currently operates four fleet tankers, including INS Shakti and INS Jyoti, allowing carrier battle groups to remain deployed without returning to harbour for extended periods.
  • Singh inaugurated a modernized slipway at the facility, which has completed 2,045 repairs over eight decades and is now equipped to build and repair large naval platforms up to 45,000 DWT.
