A Passenger Bus in Northern India Catches Fire and Burns at Least 20 People to Death
- A private air-conditioned sleeper bus carrying 57 passengers caught fire near Thaiyat village on the Jaisalmer–Jodhpur Highway on Tuesday afternoon and was later found completely charred.
- Flames erupted from the rear of the bus near the War Museum about Twenty kilometres from Jaisalmer, and the fire broke out around 3:30 p.m.; a short circuit is suspected though the exact cause is yet to be ascertained.
- Officials said `Nineteen passengers died in the bus and one succumbed to burns on the way to Jodhpur`, while sixteen injured were referred to Jodhpur, including women and children with burns up to 70%.
- Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma flew to Jaisalmer with Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar, cancelled engagements, and instructed officials to provide treatment and assistance.
- A forensic team from Jodhpur was dispatched while the district control room and helpline numbers were set up, with Army personnel and local residents assisting rescue operations.
