CCTV Cameras to Be Fixed in 74,000 Coaches: Railways
INDIA, JUL 13 – Indian Railways will equip 74,000 coaches and 15,000 locomotives with STQC-certified CCTV cameras to deter crime and enhance security for over 23 million daily passengers, officials said.
- On July 12, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw approved installing CCTV cameras in all 74,000 Indian Railways coaches and 15,000 locomotives nationwide.
- This decision followed a Panipat train incident that sparked nationwide outrage and intensified demands for better security on trains, especially for women.
- Each coach will have four dome-type cameras, two at each entrance, while locomotives will have six cameras outdoors and inside, with installations done by Northern Railway workshops.
- Minister Vaishnaw emphasized using high-quality, STQC-certified cameras capable of capturing footage at over 100 kmph and low light, and encouraged AI use on CCTV data with the IndiaAI mission.
- The rollout aims to preserve passenger privacy, improve safety, deter crime, and enable constant online monitoring, with tenders floated on July 11 and station-wide installation expected within 1.5 years.
