- India's Railway Board approved the country's first hydrogen-powered trainset on May 27, a 10-car Fuel Cell-based DEMU set for the Jind-Sonipat section of Northern Railway operating at 75 kmph maximum speed.
- This milestone emerges within broader railway modernization, as the Ministry sanctioned 100 projects in April 2026 with Rs 1.53 lakh crore investment, driving project approvals up 56 per cent and route coverage over 114 per cent versus the prior year.
- Comprising two Driving Power Cars rated 1200 kW each, totalling 2400 kW, plus eight passenger cars, the trainset achieves zero CO2 emissions with only water vapour as byproduct; maintenance is planned at Shakurbasti.
- Maharashtra, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh emerge as priority states with 17, 11, 10, and 9 projects respectively, with major emphasis on tribal and remote connectivity to markets, healthcare, education and employment.
- Over 6,000 kilometres of new railway network expansion represents historic scale for Indian Railways, combining hydrogen technology with doubling and multitracking projects designed to decongest saturated routes and improve services.
