Spain's 2026 FIFA World Cup triumph was accompanied by a sharp rise in racist and Islamophobic hate speech online, with teenage football star Lamine Yamal emerging as one of the main targets, according to Spain's Observatory on Racism and Xenophobia (OBERAXE).
The Spanish Observatory on Racism and Xenophobia has identified more than 40,000 hateful posts on social media. Lamine Yamal, who celebrated his goal against Saudi Arabia by prostrating himself in prayer, was targeted with comments such as "dirty Arab" and "not worthy of representing Spain."
