Lupolianski died after acute pneumonia that caused breathing difficulties. He was the first Haredi mayor of the capital and was convicted of accepting bribes in the "Holyland" affair that shook the country. He founded and directed the "Yad Sarah" organization, which won the Israel Prize in 1994.
