Guilty Pleas for Duo in Matric Exam Paper Scandal

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA, JUL 23 – The two men pleaded guilty and were fined R100,000 each or face imprisonment, with half the fine suspended for five years, the court ruled in Johannesburg.

The Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court has sentenced Themba Daniel Shikwambana, 36, and Thobile Sweetbetter Duze, 48, for stealing and leaking a 2020 matric maths exam paper. On 23 July 2025 , the court fined the pair R100 000 or 12 months’ imprisonment, with R50 000 or six months of the sentence suspended for five years on condition that they do not commit a similar offence.
