Blindsided: Premier Left in the Dark on Integrity Probe
Mander will lose ministerial pay and perks as he becomes a backbencher while police review whether he was enrolled at an Arana Hills address.
Olympics Minister Tim Mander stepped aside from his cabinet position on Thursday after the Australian Federal Police received a referral regarding his electoral enrollment status.
The Australian Electoral Commission referred the matter to police on Tuesday, declaring an "absence of compelling evidence" that Mander resided at the Arana Hills address where he was registered to vote.
Mander, informed of the referral while visiting New Zealand, denied wrongdoing and accused the Labor opposition of mounting a "baseless smear campaign."
Queensland Premier David Crisafulli learned of the inquiry via a note during a budget meeting, with Andrew Powell appointed as interim Olympics minister.
Improper enrollment carries a maximum 12 month jail term, while Mander also faces scrutiny over an undeclared relationship with Amanda Camm.
