Queensland Man Charged After Vehicle Hits Brisbane Synagogue Gates
A 32-year-old Sunnybank man faces multiple charges including serious vilification and hate crime after ramming Brisbane Synagogue gates, with no injuries reported, police said.
- Shortly after 7pm on Friday, a Toyota Hilux utility ute struck and knocked down the front gates of the Brisbane Synagogue on Margaret Street in the CBD.
- Police charged a 32-year-old Sunnybank man with wilful damage, serious vilification or a hate crime, dangerous operation of a vehicle and possessing dangerous drugs, treating it as targeted but not terrorism.
- Within 90 minutes, police had identified and arrested the driver after Polair assistance using the suspect's own motor vehicle, taking him into custody without incident.
- In response, Queensland Premier David Crisafulli said, `This will be very distressing for the Jewish community in Queensland`, after workers repaired the synagogue gates and the Brisbane Synagogue remained closed until further notice.
- Today the accused is due to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court, with police urging anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage to come forward.
