Québec solidaire proposes an inflation-linked cap on rent increases
The party also proposed $10,000 higher fines for repeat offenders and stronger tools against renovictions and other housing-law violations.
Quebec Solidaire members concluded their Montreal convention on Sunday by adopting a motion to cap annual rent increases in line with inflation, a policy the party would implement if elected to government.
Housing affordability has become a major political issue across Canada, with rising rents straining tenants in cities from Montreal to Vancouver, prompting Quebec Solidaire to prioritize housing security on its platform.
Members also voted to penalize "abusive landlords" to curb profit-driven practices including property flipping and renovictions, proposing fines increasing by $10,000 per repeated offense, reaching up to $100,000 for individuals and $200,000 for corporations.
Ruba Ghazal, the party's co-spokesperson, said the policy does not target small landlords, who can appeal to the rental housing tribunal if major renovations justify higher increases, stating, "We are not touching any landlord rights."
MNA Andr Fontecilla argued existing laws lack enforcement teeth and proposed government power to expropriate serial offenders, stating, "A fine has to be a deterrent, not symbolic.
