Quebec Voters Heading to the Polls for Provincial General Election
Polls show the PQ ahead as voters weigh a promised referendum and a court fight over French-only election mailings.
On Monday, October 5, 2026, voters in Quebec's 127 ridings are heading to the polls to choose a new provincial government, with The Parti, led by Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, currently ahead in opinion polls.
Campaigns dominated the last weeks, with debates centring on economic uncertainty, cost of living and the prospect of another sovereignty referendum, while St-Pierre Plamondon pledged to launch such a vote only once President Donald Trump leaves the White House.
English-Speaking Quebecers face challenges under Bill 96, which restricts who can receive government communications in English, and a judge ordered the independent agency running the vote to send subsequent mailings in both languages after earlier French-only voter cards.
Polls remain open today until 8 p.m., as citizens choose whether to continue back-to-back majority governments by Coalition Avenir or shift power to another party, after many cast advance ballots between September 25 and October 1.
Roughly 70 per cent of Quebecers oppose holding a sovereignty referendum, yet Quebec Conservative Leader Duhaime could hold the balance of power if no party wins a majority, in an election where turnout typically reaches approximately 66 per cent.
CONTRIBUTION / OPINION. This Monday, October 5, is the provincial election in Quebec, in a political field divided between right, left, sovereignists and federalists.
