Qantas Says 20-Hour Sydney-London Flights Will Start in 2027
The 238-seat Airbus A350-1000ULR service will cut up to four hours from one-stop trips and later add Sydney-New York, Qantas said.
- Australian carrier Qantas confirmed direct flights between London and Sydney will launch in October 2027, expected to last up to 22 hours and become the longest commercial flight on the planet.
- Qantas Group chief executive Vanessa Hudson stated the airline will use 12 Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft built by Airbus in Toulouse to "conquer the final frontier of long-haul aviation," featuring extra fuel tanks enabling the 16,995km non-stop journey.
- Each plane will accommodate 238 passengers across four cabins, with tickets anticipated to go on sale from February next year. This service surpasses Singapore Airlines' 15,349km route between New York and Singapore.
- UK Tourism Minister Stephanie Peacock called the service a "historic moment" for British aviation and tourism. VisitBritain chief executive Patricia Yates noted the route expands connectivity and seat capacity for the competitive tourism market.
- The new service will operate alongside existing Perth-London and Sydney-Singapore-London flights. Qantas also plans to launch a second Project Sunrise route connecting Australia and New York directly, expanding its global network.
