Qantas launches $99 ticket sale
The sale covers two million one-way seats on about 90 routes as Qantas trims capacity by 5% amid higher fuel costs.
- On Tuesday, Qantas launched a sale of 2 million domestic seats from $99, one day after Virgin Australia offered half-a-million fares starting at $55 on Monday, April 20.
- Both carriers face surging energy costs linked to the Middle East conflict, with Qantas flagging an $800 million fuel expense increase and Virgin expecting $30 million to $40 million additional costs.
- Qantas told the Australian sharemarket it is cutting capacity by 5 per cent across Qantas and Jetstar networks, while Griffith University Professor of Aviation Tim Ryley said airlines must "move quickly" to succeed.
- Hijazeen warned that "once these sales end, we may see higher average fares if fuel prices continue to rise," with Qantas' sale ending Tuesday, April 28 and Virgin's ending Sunday, April 26.
- Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz, causing jet fuel prices to increase as much as 150 per cent for buyers in Asia and Oceania, crippling Persian Gulf-based airlines through geopolitical disruption.
