Q&A: Anna Gomez is the sole Democrat on the FCC. She has a warning for big media companies
Gomez says Disney should resist what she calls a coordinated campaign of censorship and control, as the FCC reviews ABC licenses and other broadcasters face scrutiny.
FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez sent a four-page letter earlier this month to Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro describing the FCC's "sustained, coordinated campaign of censorship and control," urging him to fight back against license reviews.
One of just a few Democrats remaining at federal agencies after the administration fired most Democratic members from independent commissions, Gomez grew alarmed by what she saw as a campaign to control speech, citing settlements by CBS and ABC.
The FCC investigations under Chairman Brendan Carr span diversity practices, ABC's 2024 debate moderation, The View guest selections, and administration calls for late-night host Jimmy Kimmel to be fired, while Disney paid a $15 million settlement Gomez said "did not buy you peace."
Gomez expressed optimism about Disney's legal response this month, in which the company accused the FCC of chilling protected speech, and encouraged other broadcasters to prepare for similar fights based on her prediction that challengers will prevail.
With her term ending June 30, Gomez faces daily uncertainty about her job security yet remains committed to speaking out for the First Amendment despite potential consequences, maintaining a collegial relationship with Chairman Carr.
